A diagnostic centre in Chattogram used one phone for all WhatsApp messages. Patients sent questions, test bookings and report requests to the same number. Three staff members passed the phone around. At night, nobody answered. On busy mornings, 200 messages waited. Patients started calling instead, and the phone lines jammed too.
They moved to the WhatsApp Business API in Bangladesh through a provider. Now four agents share one number from their computers, a bot answers common questions in Bangla, and reports are sent automatically when ready. The phone no longer rules their day.
This guide explains when you need the API, what it costs under the current rules, how to set it up and how to use it without getting blocked.
WhatsApp Business app vs API

Most Bangladeshi businesses start with the free WhatsApp Business app. It gives you a business profile, catalogue, labels, quick replies and away messages. For a small shop, it is enough.
The API is different. It is not an app you download. It connects your WhatsApp number to software, so you can:
- Let many agents reply from one number at the same time.
- Add chatbots and AI agents that answer 24/7.
- Send automatic order updates, OTPs, reminders and receipts.
- Send approved marketing messages to customers who opted in.
- Connect chats to your CRM, store or booking system.
Signs you need the API
- More than one person needs to reply to WhatsApp.
- Messages pile up at night or on busy days.
- You want automatic order or appointment updates.
- You run click-to-WhatsApp ads and need faster replies.
- You want reports on reply times and sales from chat.
If none of these apply, stay with the app for now. It is free and simple.
How WhatsApp pricing works in 2026
Meta changed WhatsApp pricing in 2025 and again in 2026. Here are the main rules, but always check Meta’s official pricing page and your provider for current rates.
- Per-message pricing: since July 1, 2025, Meta charges per delivered template message, not per 24-hour conversation.
- Template categories: marketing, utility and authentication messages are priced differently. Marketing is the most expensive.
- Rates depend on the recipient’s country. Messaging customers in Bangladesh costs differently from messaging customers in the UK or UAE.
- Utility templates inside an open customer service window are free.
- Service messages: replies to customers inside the 24-hour window. From October 1, 2026, Meta announced charging for service messages above a free allowance of 1,000 per month per business phone number. Check how this applies to your account.
The 24-hour window, explained simply

When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Inside it, you can reply freely with any text, images or files. After 24 hours, you can only send approved templates. Each new message from the customer opens a fresh window.
This rule protects users from spam. It also means you should reply fast and solve things inside the window whenever possible.
Step-by-step setup
- Get your Meta Business account ready. Complete business verification with your trade licence and matching details.
- Choose a phone number. It can be new or existing. It must be able to receive an SMS or call for verification.
- Pick a provider. Choose a BSP or platform that supports Bangla, has a good inbox, and fits your budget. You can also use Meta’s Cloud API directly if you have developers.
- Set your display name and profile. The name must match your business and follow Meta’s rules.
- Create message templates. Write order updates, reminders and offers, and submit them for approval.
- Connect your systems: website, store, CRM or booking tool.
- Train your team and set reply time goals.
Message templates that get approved
Meta reviews every template. To get approval faster:
- Pick the correct category. Do not label a promotion as “utility”.
- Be clear and specific. Avoid vague, spammy wording.
- Use variables like {{1}} for names and order numbers, with sample values.
- Give an easy way to opt out of marketing messages.
Example utility template: “Hi {{1}}, your order {{2}} has been shipped with {{3}}. Track it here: {{4}}. Reply to this message if you need help.”
Five smart ways Bangladeshi businesses use the API
1. Order confirmation to cut fake COD orders
Send an automatic WhatsApp message after every order with buttons: “Confirm” or “Cancel”. Only confirmed orders go to the courier. This simple step saves many failed deliveries. More in our fake COD orders guide.
2. Delivery updates
Send shipping and delivery messages with tracking links. Fewer “where is my order?” calls.
3. Appointment reminders
Clinics, salons and coaching centres send reminders the day before. No-shows drop.
4. AI agents for 24/7 answers
An AI agent trained on your products, prices and policies can answer in Bangla and English, collect order details and hand difficult chats to a human. See our AI agents service.
5. Click-to-WhatsApp ads
Meta ads that open a WhatsApp chat work very well in Bangladesh, where people like to ask before buying. With the API, these chats go straight to your team inbox or bot, with the ad source attached.
WhatsApp marketing without getting blocked
Every number has a quality rating. If many people block or report your messages, your rating drops and your sending limits can shrink. Stay safe:
- Only message people who gave clear permission.
- Send useful messages, not daily promotions.
- Personalise by name and past purchases.
- Make opting out easy.
- Never use unofficial “bulk WhatsApp sender” tools. They break WhatsApp’s terms and get numbers banned.
How to choose a WhatsApp API provider
There are many providers selling to Bangladeshi businesses: global platforms, regional partners and local resellers. Before you sign, test them with a free trial and ask these questions:
- Is it an official Meta Business Solution Provider or built on the official Cloud API? Avoid anything unofficial.
- How good is the shared inbox? Can you assign chats, add notes, use labels and see history?
- Does it support Bangla well in templates, bots and search?
- What integrations exist? WooCommerce, Shopify, your CRM, Google Sheets, courier panels.
- How is billing done? In dollars or taka, by card or bank transfer, with clear invoices for VAT?
- What support do you get if your number is restricted or a template is rejected?
Ask for a full monthly cost estimate based on your real volume: number of agents, expected marketing messages, utility messages and service conversations.
A simple AI chat flow for a Bangladeshi shop
Here is how a clothing brand set up its first automated flow. You can copy the idea.
- Customer clicks a WhatsApp ad and sends “Price?”
- The bot replies in Bangla with the product photo, price, sizes and delivery charge.
- It asks for size, name, phone and full address in one friendly message.
- It shows an order summary with “Confirm” and “Change” buttons.
- Confirmed orders go to the order sheet and courier panel automatically.
- If the customer asks something unusual, or seems unhappy, a human takes over.
The brand’s team now spends time on the hard chats and on calling back unsure buyers, instead of typing the same price fifty times a day.
Measure what WhatsApp brings in
| Metric | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| First reply time | Fast replies win sales |
| Chat-to-order rate | Shows if chats turn into money |
| Template read and click rates | Shows if messages are useful |
| Block and opt-out rate | Early warning for quality problems |
| Cost per order from WhatsApp | Includes Meta and provider fees |
Common mistakes
- Buying number lists and messaging strangers.
- Sending the same promotion to everyone every day.
- Choosing a provider only on price, without testing the inbox.
- No human backup for the bot.
- Not tracking which ads and templates bring orders.
Is the API worth it? A simple ROI example

A store sends a cart reminder to 1,000 people who left items in their cart. Here is a rough example of the maths. Your costs and conversion rates will differ.
| Line | Example |
|---|---|
| Reminders sent | 1,000 |
| Message cost | 1,000 × Meta’s current marketing rate for Bangladesh, plus your provider’s fee |
| Orders recovered (5%) | 50 |
| Average order value | Tk 1,800 |
| Recovered revenue | Tk 90,000 |
Even with a lower recovery rate, cart and order reminders usually pay for themselves many times over. Mass promotional blasts are a different story. Test them in small batches first.
Quality rating and messaging limits: why numbers get restricted
Every WhatsApp Business API number has a quality rating and a messaging limit. They decide how many people you can start conversations with in a day, and they are the main reason numbers get blocked.
- Quality rating (green, yellow or red) is based on how people react to your messages recently. Blocks and “report” taps pull it down. You can see it in WhatsApp Manager.
- Messaging limit is how many unique people you can message first, in a rolling 24 hours, with template messages. New numbers start low. The limit rises when you send to more people while keeping quality high, and once your business is verified.
- Replies inside the 24-hour window do not count toward the limit. Customers who message you first can always get an answer.
The practical rules: only message people who opted in, send fewer and more useful templates, include an easy way to stop messages, and stop a campaign the moment the rating turns yellow. A red rating can pause your number, and getting it back takes far longer than slowing down would have.
The diagnostic centre today
The centre now answers most questions within minutes, day or night. Reports go out automatically, with a template that patients can reply to if they have questions. Staff handle only the chats that need a human. Phone calls dropped, and patient reviews improved.

Frequently asked questions
Is WhatsApp Business API free in Bangladesh?
No. Meta charges per template message for marketing, utility and authentication messages, based on the country of the recipient. Service conversations started by customers have their own rules, and solution providers may add their own fees.
What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the API?
The app is free and runs on one phone with manual replies. The API connects WhatsApp to software, so many agents, chatbots, CRMs and automated notifications can use one number.
Can I send bulk messages on WhatsApp?
Only through the API, only to people who opted in, and only with approved message templates. Unofficial bulk tools break WhatsApp rules and often get numbers banned.
How long does API setup take?
With a verified Meta Business account and a ready phone number, setup through a solution provider can take a few days. Business verification can take longer.
Can I use my existing WhatsApp number for the API?
Usually yes, but the number must be moved to the API, and in many cases it can no longer be used in the regular app at the same time. Check the current coexistence options with your provider.
