Courier Service in Bangladesh for E-commerce: How to Choose and Save on Every Order

A gadget shop in Chattogram once sent us its numbers. Out of 1,000 parcels in a month, 210 came back. Each return cost them the delivery charge both ways, packaging, and stock that sat in a courier warehouse for a week. They thought their problem was ads. It was actually delivery.

Choosing a courier service in Bangladesh is one of the most important decisions an online seller makes. Your courier decides how fast customers get their order, how many parcels come back and how quickly your cash returns to you. This guide shows how to compare couriers and how to cut failed deliveries.

Why your courier matters more than you think

For the customer, the courier is your brand. They do not care which company carried the parcel. If it is late, damaged or the rider is rude, they blame you.

Delivery also affects the rules you must follow. Bangladesh’s Digital Commerce Operation Guidelines say fully paid orders should reach customers within 5 days in the same city and 10 days in other cities or villages. A slow courier can put you on the wrong side of that.

Main courier options for online sellers

Bangladesh has many e-commerce couriers. Common names include Pathao Courier, Steadfast, RedX, Paperfly, eCourier and Sundarban Courier, plus many regional players. Each has strengths in different areas and product types.

We do not recommend one courier for everyone. A fashion seller in Dhaka, a book shop shipping nationwide and a furniture brand all need different things. The smart move is to compare on the factors below, then test.

Eight things to compare

1. Delivery charge

Most couriers price by zone and weight: inside Dhaka, Dhaka suburbs and the rest of Bangladesh. As an example, Paperfly’s published rates show Tk 70 for up to 1 kg inside Dhaka, Tk 110 for the suburbs and Tk 130 for the rest of the country, plus Tk 20 per extra kg.

Example courier delivery charges in Bangladesh from Paperfly published rates

2. COD charge

This is the fee for collecting cash. Paperfly, for example, lists 0% inside the same city and 1% of the collected amount elsewhere. On a Tk 2,000 order, 1% is Tk 20. Small, but it adds up over thousands of orders.

3. Payout speed

How fast does your COD money reach you? Cash stuck with a courier is cash you cannot spend on stock or ads. Ask whether payouts are daily, a few times a week or weekly, and whether they pay to your bank or bKash.

4. Return charge and process

What happens when a customer refuses the parcel? Some couriers charge a return fee, some include returns in the delivery charge. Ask how long returns take to come back to you.

5. Coverage

Check delivery to your key districts and upazilas. A courier that is great in Dhaka may be weak in remote areas.

6. Pickup

Will they pick up from your home or warehouse every day? At what time? Same-day pickup means faster delivery.

7. Tracking and communication

Customers love tracking links and SMS updates. Riders who call before arriving reduce failed deliveries.

8. API and integration

If you have a website, an API lets orders go to the courier automatically and brings tracking numbers back. Many couriers have WooCommerce plugins or APIs. For a growing shop, this saves hours of typing every day.

A simple comparison sheet

Make a sheet like this for the couriers you are considering. Fill it with the latest numbers from each one.

Factor Courier A Courier B Courier C
Inside Dhaka, 1 kg
Outside Dhaka, 1 kg
COD charge
Return charge
Payout speed
Daily pickup time
API / plugin
Success rate in your test

Test before you commit

Price lists only tell part of the story. Real performance shows up in your own orders. Here is how we help clients test:

  1. Pick two couriers that look good on paper.
  2. Split orders for two to four weeks, for example by area or by day.
  3. Track delivery time, success rate, damage, payout speed and customer complaints.
  4. Keep the winner as your main courier and the other as backup.

Many larger shops use two couriers permanently: one for Dhaka, one for outside Dhaka, or one main and one backup for busy seasons like Eid.

Why deliveries fail, and how to fix it

Common reasons for failed e-commerce deliveries in Bangladesh

Customer not reachable

The rider calls, nobody picks up, the parcel goes back. Fix: confirm every order by phone or WhatsApp before shipping, and ask for an alternative number.

Customer changed their mind

Impulse orders from ads often cool off in a few days. Fix: ship the same day, send tracking updates, and keep delivery fast. The longer the wait, the more people cancel.

Fake or prank orders

A real problem with cash on delivery. Fix: OTP or call verification, partial advance for high-value or risky orders, and a simple blacklist. Our guide on reducing fake COD orders explains the full system.

Wrong or incomplete address

Bangladeshi addresses can be hard to find. Fix: ask for area, road, house number and a nearby landmark. On your website, use separate fields for district and area.

Late delivery

Fix: same-day pickup, a courier strong in that area, and clear delivery times on your product page.

Connect your courier to your website

If you run a WooCommerce store, courier integration is one of the best upgrades you can make. With it:

  • New orders are sent to the courier with one click or automatically.
  • Tracking numbers and status come back to the order.
  • Customers get automatic SMS or WhatsApp updates.
  • Your team stops typing addresses into courier portals by hand.

We build this for stores through our WooCommerce development service. One client saved about three hours of manual work every day.

Packaging that protects your profit

  • Use the right size box or flyer. Oversized packs can push you into a higher weight band.
  • Protect fragile items with bubble wrap and “Fragile” labels.
  • Seal parcels well. Tampering leads to disputes.
  • Print a clear label with the order number, phone and COD amount.
  • Weigh parcels before booking, so charges match.

Express and same-day delivery

Inside Dhaka, many buyers now expect delivery within a day. Several couriers offer same-day or next-day service for an extra charge. It is worth it for:

  • Food, flowers and gifts that must arrive on a date.
  • High-value items where speed reduces cancellations.
  • Premium brands that want to stand out on service.

Show the faster option at checkout with a clear price. Many customers will happily pay a little more to get their order today.

Handling the Eid rush

Every courier gets overloaded before Eid. Parcels pile up, riders are stretched and delays grow. Plan for it:

  1. Talk to your courier two to three weeks early. Ask about cut-off dates for delivery before Eid.
  2. Show the last order date on your website and ads, so buyers know when to order.
  3. Use a backup courier for overflow.
  4. Pack in advance for your best-selling items.
  5. Increase confirmations, because impulse orders rise during festivals.

Heavy, bulky and fragile products

Furniture, electronics and glass items need special care. Standard parcel couriers may not handle them, or may charge heavily by weight. Options include couriers with dedicated heavy-goods service, local transport partners for big items, and your own delivery team in Dhaka. Always photograph the item when packing, so you have proof if there is damage.

Keep customers informed

Most “where is my order?” calls disappear when customers get simple updates. A good sequence:

When Message
Order confirmed Thank you, your order is confirmed. Total Tk X. Expected delivery: date.
Handed to courier Your parcel is on the way. Track here: link.
Out for delivery The rider will call you today. Please keep your phone on.
Delivered Thanks for shopping with us. How did we do? Reply with a rating.

These can be sent automatically by SMS or WhatsApp when your store and courier are connected.

What to check in a courier agreement

  • Exact delivery and COD charges by zone and weight.
  • Return charges and how many delivery attempts they make.
  • Payout schedule, method and any minimum amount.
  • Who pays for lost or damaged parcels, and up to what value.
  • How disputes are handled and how fast.
  • Daily pickup time and cut-off time for same-day dispatch.
  • Notice period if you want to change couriers.

Get these in writing, even if it is just an email or a WhatsApp message from your account manager.

Should you run your own delivery team?

Some shops in Dhaka build a small in-house delivery team. It makes sense when you have many orders in a few areas, sell fragile or high-value items, or want full control of the customer experience. It also brings new costs: salaries, bikes, fuel, cash handling and management time.

A common middle path is to use your own riders for nearby areas with high order volume, and couriers for everything else. Start with couriers, and only build your own team when the numbers clearly support it.

Calculate your true delivery cost

Your real cost per delivered order is not just the delivery charge. It includes COD fees, returns and packaging. A simple formula:

True delivery cost = (delivery charges + COD fees + return costs + packaging) ÷ delivered orders

If 20% of parcels come back, your true cost per delivered order can be much higher than the price list suggests. Cutting returns from 20% to 10% often saves more money than finding a cheaper courier.

When a parcel is lost or damaged: how to claim

Every seller who ships enough parcels will lose some. What you get back depends on what you did before the parcel left your shop.

  1. Before shipping: photograph the packed parcel with the label visible, and keep the courier’s booking receipt or digital record. For valuable items, declare the real value when booking; many couriers cap compensation for undeclared value.
  2. As soon as you notice: raise the claim in the courier’s merchant panel or by email, with the tracking number, photos and invoice. Most couriers set a time limit for claims, so do it within days, not weeks.
  3. Damage at delivery: ask customers to refuse or record a video when a box is visibly crushed. That video is often the only proof that the damage happened in transit.
  4. Follow up weekly and keep all replies in one thread. Note the claim in your order sheet so it is settled in your next payment.

Read the compensation terms in your courier agreement before you sign. The difference between “full declared value” and “a fixed maximum per parcel” matters a lot if you sell phones, cosmetics or electronics.

Reconcile COD money every week

The courier collects your cash, deducts charges and pays you later. Small mismatches add up fast. Once a week, match three lists:

List Where it comes from What to check
Delivered orders Courier panel export Every delivered parcel has a payment line
Payments received Bank or wallet statement Total matches the courier’s payout report
Charges and returns Courier invoice Return and COD charges match the parcels that really came back

Anything that does not match goes to the courier the same week. Disputes about last month are slow; disputes about last week are usually fixed in a day.

What the Chattogram gadget shop changed

They did four things. They added a WhatsApp confirmation message for every order, with a one-tap reply. They asked for the delivery charge in advance on orders above a set value. They split orders between two couriers for a month and kept the faster one for their district. And they shipped every confirmed order on the same day. Their return rate fell to about 9% within two months.

A courier is not just a cost line. It is part of your customer experience and your cash flow. Choose carefully, test with real orders, and keep measuring. If your store needs courier integration or a better checkout, our team can help through our web development services.
